The Urban Perspective exhibit showcases two of
Sacramento's premier graffiti inspired artists; Eric Goodman and
Shane Grammer. With their cutting edge talent and winning
personalities both men are leaving their mark in the art world.
A frequent exhibitor in Japan, Eric Goodman also
displays his paintings locally and participates in public art
projects. Recently, Eric contributed to an 80' foot mural called
"Mosaics" for M.A.P(Midtown Alley Project). His unique cartoons in
candy colored pastels added a sense of sweetness and humor to the
finished mural.
Eric's style has universal appeal, his characters
are a bit nostalgic, they remind us of a simpler time; a time when
we loved a cartoon character simply because it was lovable. Such is
the case with many of Eric's paintings but none more so than "Faint
To None" the tender little guy rendered in this piece is soon to
become a collectors favorite.
A talented musician and videographer Eric tells
us about a newly finished painting;
"I am extremely proud
to be displaying my piece titled "Festation" in which I made
two stop motion videos. It is a two part stop motion video of the
piece basically through the process of being painted. I also
produced the music for the videos."
Shane Grammer is a talented artist who grew up
fascinated with edgy urban art and design. For the past fifteen
years, Grammer has specialized in the creation of unique, highly
stylized murals and three-dimensional art pieces. His passion for
the colors and textures fostered in graffiti and industrial art led
him to develop SG Studios where he designs and constructs themed
environments and art installations.
For the Urban Perspective exhibit Shane built a
custom art installation inside the Blue Wing Gallery. This amazing
urban village is the perfect backdrop for his "Fatherless Boy"
paintings.
This emotional and magnetic character was created
by Shane who was born to a drug-addicted father and raised by a
step-father who rejected him in favor of his younger half-brother.
Grammer began to explore his past while creating this character.
Contemplative and downcast, the Fatherless Boy's posture reflects
the isolation and loneliness of a rejected child. Not yet
self-aware, the boy is left to wonder about his purpose. The
covering of rust evokes the brokenness and hurt the boy carries
around with him.
Although the piece initially speaks of Grammer's
love for street art, the boy's misproportioned body grew to mean
much more. The
over-sized heart represents the good heart of this lost boy, while
the enlarged hands speak to his identity - he was created to be a
creator.
"This show pays tribute to our current culture
giving these legitimate artists a venue to display their pieces"
says curator Clare Bailey, "Both men were completely dedicated to
creating a cohesive exhibit. We've never had an installation at Blue
Wing and we've never shown videos, I am thankful these artists said
YES and helped us push the limits in what we showcase"
